Add Objects to a Saved Map

Add and edit markers, shapes, and drawings on a saved map.

When you place an object on a saved map — a marker, radius, sector, polygon, line, snap-to-road line or freehand drawing — this card collects its details. You set a name, a description, a colour, an opacity, an icon for markers, a folder to file it in, and optionally a worksheet template. The fields you see change with the kind of object you are placing, and the card's heading always tells you which kind that is.

Coordinates	Markers and Sectors	Shows the object's point in every coordinate format.
Save / Cancel	Add and edit modes	Store or discard your changes.
Edit / Delete	View mode	Unlock the fields, or remove the object.

Markers get the Type and Icon drop-downs and no opacity control. Every other object gets the opacity slider instead of the icon drop-downs.

Getting Here

1. Open a saved map from Saved Maps.
2. Open the map's menu and tap the object you want to add: Marker, Line, Polygon, Radius, Sector, Freehand or Snap To Road.
3. A short prompt appears — for example Please click on map to add marker.
4. Place the object on the map. Markers, radii and sectors take a single tap; lines, polygons and snap-to-road lines take a tap per point; freehand follows your finger.
5. The details card opens, titled with the object type and with the keyboard on the Name field.

You can also tap Use Current Location on the bottom bar to place the object where you are standing instead of tapping the map.

Add a Marker

1. Type a Name.
2. Tap Type and pick the icon category. The list is grouped, with category headings you cannot select and the real categories underneath — app-wide categories are listed first, then any your organization has added.
3. Tap Icon and pick the marker icon. Each row shows the icon beside its name. As with types, app-wide icons come first, then your organization's own.
4. Optionally set Color, choose a Folder, and attach a Worksheet.
5. Tap Save.

caution

You must pick the Type before the Icon. Tapping Icon while Type still reads Select shows Select type and the icon list does not open. Changing the Type afterwards resets the Icon back to Select, because each type has its own icons.

Add a Line, Polygon, Freehand or Snap-to-Road Object

1. Type a Name.
2. Tap Color and choose the colour to draw it in.
3. Set the Opacity with the slider, or type the value into the number field beside it. The slider and the field stay in step with each other.
4. Optionally choose a Folder and attach a Worksheet.
5. Tap Save.

tip

Drop opacity on a large polygon so the map, roads and other layers still read through it. A solid fill hides everything underneath.

Add a Radius

1. Type a Name.
2. Enter the Radius. The circle is drawn around the point you tapped.
3. Adjust Color and Opacity as needed.
4. Optionally choose a Folder and attach a Worksheet, then tap Save.

Add a Sector

A sector is a pie slice: a radius, pointed in a direction, spread over a width.

1. Type a Name.
2. Enter the Radius — how far the slice reaches.
3. Enter the Bearing — the compass direction the slice points, in degrees.
4. Enter the Beam Width — how wide the slice spreads, in degrees.
5. Adjust Color and Opacity, choose a Folder and a Worksheet if you want, then tap Save.

tip

A sector is the quickest way to show a direction of spread or a coverage arc — for example a plume downwind, or the area an antenna covers.

Attach a Worksheet

1. Tap Worksheet. The list shows the worksheet templates published for your organization, by name.
2. Tap the template you want. Its name replaces Select on the button, and the worksheet button at the bottom of the card becomes active.
3. Tap that button to open and fill in the worksheet for this object.

The worksheet button stays dimmed until a template is chosen, because there is nothing yet to open.

File an Object Into a Folder

1. Tap Folder. The list starts with Select — meaning no folder — followed by the folders on this map.
2. Tap a folder to file the object there.

Create folders from Folder on the saved map's menu. Showing and hiding folders is what lets you build a busy map that you can still read.

View, Edit or Delete an Object

1. Tap an existing object on the map, or open it from Object Details on the map menu.
2. The card opens in view mode: every field is filled in and read-only, the drop-down arrows are hidden, and the buttons are Edit and Delete.
3. Tap Edit to unlock the fields. The arrows come back and the buttons change to Save and Cancel. Make your changes and tap Save.
4. Tap Delete to remove the object. You are asked Delete — Are you sure you want to delete this object? Choose Yes or No.

For a radius or a sector, editing the radius, bearing or beam width redraws the shape around its existing centre point — you do not have to place it again.

caution

Required fields are checked when you save. Depending on the object you may see Enter name, Enter radius, Enter bearing or Enter beam width. Tap OK on the message, fill in the field, and save again.

How This Connects

• Objects are written to the saved map on the device first and then synced to the server, so you can keep marking up a map without a connection and it will upload later. That means a teammate may not see a new object immediately.
• Objects appear for your team when the saved map is marked Sharable — see Name a Saved Map.
• Every object on the map is listed, folder by folder, in Map Shapes & Objects, and shows on an incident's Maps tab when the map is attached to that incident.
• Type and Icon lists come from two places: the icon set shipped with the app, and any icons an administrator has added for your organization. Icons are stored on the device, which is why they still draw when you are offline.
• The Worksheet list is your organization's worksheet templates, so the form a marker opens is the same form used elsewhere in the app.
• Street View on a marker opens the same panorama screen as the map menu — see Street View. Coordinates shows the point in every format with a copy action — see Coordinate Format.
• Folder groups objects on this map. Create folders from the saved map menu, which is also where Object Labels turns the names beside objects on and off.

Troubleshooting

If this happens	What to do
Tapping Icon shows Select type	Pick the Type first. Each type has its own set of icons.
The Icon reset itself to Select	You changed the Type, which clears the icon. Choose a new icon from the new type's list.
An icon row shows a name but no picture	That icon's image has not downloaded to the device yet. Reconnect, give it a moment, and reopen the list.
Save shows Enter name	The name is required for every object. Type one and save again.
Save shows Enter radius, Enter bearing or Enter beam width	A radius needs a radius; a sector needs all three. Fill in the missing field.
The fields are greyed out and will not accept typing	You are in view mode. Tap Edit first.
The worksheet button is dimmed	No template has been chosen yet. Pick one from Worksheet.
The Worksheet list is empty	Your organization has no worksheet templates published, or they have not synced. Reconnect and reopen the card.
The shape covers everything under it	Lower the Opacity, or pick a lighter Color.
Your object is on the map but a teammate cannot see it	Check the map is Sharable and that your device has synced since you added it.
You deleted an object by mistake	There is no undo once the delete is confirmed. Add it again — for a radius or sector, place the centre and re-enter the values.
