Map

Your live, full-screen map for finding locations, searching coordinates, and watching what is happening around you.

The Map screen shows a full-screen map centered on your current location. From here you can search by place name or coordinates, switch the base map, turn on live overlays such as aircraft, unit locations, evacuation status and district status, get a drive time to a point, open street-level imagery, and save the view into one of your saved maps. It is the quickest way to orient yourself and the people you are working with in the field.

Overview

The map is controlled by a three-dot menu in the top corner. Tapping it opens a single list of tools and overlays. Most rows act the moment you tap them and close the menu; a few rows expand in place into a bordered box with their own list and an APPLY button.

District Status	On/off	Shade district coverage, refreshed every 10 seconds.
Current Location	Acts at once	Clear what is drawn and re-center on you.
Street View	Opens a screen	Open street-level imagery at the selected point.
Add To Map	Opens a picker	Put the point into one of your saved maps.

Rows that can be switched on and off show a checkbox on the right: a filled checkbox means the overlay is on, an empty box means it is off. The app remembers these on/off states, so an overlay you left on is still on the next time you open the map.

Unit Locations and District Status are drawn faintly in the menu. They stay faint even when they are working — that is only styling, not a fault.

Getting Here

1. From Home, open the Map tool.
2. The first time you open it, the app asks for permission to use your location. Tap OK, then Allow on the system prompt.
3. The map opens centered on your position at a close-in zoom, with your location shown as a dot.
4. Tap the three-dot menu in the top corner to reach every tool below.

caution

If location permission is off you will see Location Permission Denied with the message Please enable location permission in settings to use this feature. Tap OK to jump to the app's settings and turn location back on. Until you do, the map opens but cannot center on you or work out a drive time.

Search for a Place

1. Open the three-dot menu and tap Location Search.
2. A search panel slides in and the keyboard opens. Begin typing a place name or address.
3. Matching results appear in a list. Each row shows the place name followed by a short description, such as a city and state.
4. Tap a result. The panel closes, a marker is dropped at the place, and the map moves there.

If nothing can be matched, or the chosen result has no usable position, a brief Location not found message appears at the bottom of the screen and the map does not move.

tip

Use Coordinate Search instead when you already have a latitude/longitude, a grid reference, or a three-word address. It is faster and it is exact.

Jump to a Coordinate

1. Open the three-dot menu and tap Coordinate Search.
2. A single coordinate box appears and the keyboard opens.
3. Type the coordinate in whichever format you have. You do not pick the format — the app works it out from what you type.
4. Press the keyboard's return key, or tap the search button beside the box. The box closes, a marker is dropped, and the map re-centers on that point.

If the text does not match any of these patterns, nothing happens — the box simply closes. Check for missing minus signs on a western longitude, and for a missing comma between latitude and longitude.

Change the Base Map

1. Open the three-dot menu and tap Base Map. The row expands into a bordered box listing every style your organization publishes.
2. The style currently in use shows a filled circle; the others show an empty circle. Tap the style you want.
3. Tap APPLY. The menu closes and the map redraws in the new style.

Your choice is saved to your profile, so the same style is used the next time you open a map anywhere in the app. If your organization has not published any styles the box shows No Item and there is nothing to apply.

Turn Map Layers On and Off

1. Open the three-dot menu and tap Map Layers. The row expands into a bordered box.
2. Each layer has a checkbox. Tap a layer to tick or untick it — you can have as many on at once as you like.
3. Tap APPLY. The layers are drawn over the base map and saved as your defaults.

Only layers your organization has marked for use as map layers appear here. See Map Style Options for the standalone picker, which also lets you drag layers into a different stacking order.

Shade Evacuation Status

1. Open the three-dot menu and tap EVAC Status. The row expands into a bordered box with five choices.
2. Tick the statuses you want shaded on the map:

Status	Typical use
Evacuation Order	Areas that must leave now.
Evacuation Warning	Areas told to be ready to leave.
Shelter In Place	Areas told to stay indoors.
Advisory	Areas under an advisory only.
Evacuation Order Lifted	Areas where an order has been stood down.

3. Tap APPLY. Evacuation areas are shaded and then refreshed on their own every 60 seconds.
4. To take the shading off, reopen EVAC Status and tap CLEAR.

caution

APPLY stays dimmed and will not respond until at least one status is ticked. CLEAR only appears once evacuation shading is already switched on.

Turn On Live Overlays

1. Open the three-dot menu.
2. Tap Flight Tracking to show aircraft. Positions are fetched immediately and then refreshed every 7 seconds. Tapping the row again removes every aircraft, clears any drawn flight track, and stops the refresh.
3. Tap Unit Locations. A filter checklist opens first so you choose whose positions you want (see Filter People on the Map). After you tap Done the positions are drawn and then refreshed every 10 seconds. Tapping the row when unit locations are already on clears the filter and removes the markers.
4. Tap District Status to shade district coverage, refreshed every 10 seconds. Tapping it again returns the districts to a plain outline.

note

District Status only responds when the district layer is actually present in the map style you are using. On a style without it the row does nothing.

Read What Is on the Map

• Tap an aircraft to open a small popup titled Aircraft followed by its identifier, from which you can show its details or draw its track. See Flight Detail.
• Tap a property or feature to look up the reference information behind it. If the reference database has not finished downloading you will see Reference database is still downloading. Please wait and try again.
• Tap a search marker to be asked Street View — Are you sure you want to open street view? Choose Yes to open the panorama or No to stay on the map.
• Press and hold anywhere on the map to see the coordinate of that spot.

Get a Drive Time

1. Search for a place, or jump to a coordinate.
2. The app works out a driving route from your current position to that point, using the traffic-aware driving profile.
3. A strip appears at the bottom of the screen showing the estimated travel time (for example 12 min 30 sec) and the distance in miles to one decimal place.
4. For full turn-by-turn guidance, open the Reference Map and use its Direction tool. See Directions.

A drive time needs both your own position and a destination. If your location is not yet fixed, no strip appears — use Current Location from the menu to force a fresh fix and search again.

Open Street View

1. Choose the point you want by searching for it or by jumping to a coordinate.
2. Open the three-dot menu and tap Street View.
3. The panorama screen opens at the nearest available imagery. See Street View.

Save the Point Into a Saved Map

1. Open the three-dot menu and tap Add To Map.
2. Your saved maps are listed by name. Tap one to open it, or tap Create New to start a new one and give it a name.
3. When you create a new map you are asked for a Name, an optional Description, and the Sharable and Offline switches. See Name a Saved Map.

If you have no saved maps yet, the list shows a short "no data" message with Create New still available.

How This Connects

• The base map style and the map layers you apply here are your account's map defaults. They are stored with your organization settings and reused by the Reference Map, by every saved map, by the incident Maps tab, and by the track playback in My Tracking. Change them in one place and they change everywhere.
• Unit Locations are the same positions your teammates are reporting from their own devices, so what you see depends on who is currently sharing. The filter you choose is remembered per device.
• Flight Tracking, EVAC Status and District Status are all pulled live from the server on their own timers. When you have no connection they simply stop updating; the last data drawn stays on screen until you leave the screen.
• Saved maps written from here are the same maps you open from the Reference Map and from an incident, and the markers and shapes on them are listed in Map Shapes & Objects.
• Coordinates you find here can be read in every format, and copied, on the GPS screen and in the Coordinate Format display.
• Whether distances read in feet and miles or metres and kilometres comes from your unit system in General App Settings.

Troubleshooting

If this happens	What to do
The map opens but never centers on you	Location permission is probably off. Open the menu and tap Current Location; if nothing happens, allow location for the app in iOS Settings and come back.
Your dot is in roughly the right place but not exact	Step outside or away from tall buildings and wait a few seconds. Check the live Accuracy figure on the GPS screen to see how good the fix currently is.
Map tiles stay blank or grey	You are probably offline or on a very weak connection. Base map tiles are fetched live. Download the area ahead of time from the Reference Map so it is available without a connection.
A search finds nothing	You will see Location not found. Try a shorter, simpler search (street and town rather than a full postal address), or use Coordinate Search instead.
Coordinate Search closes and nothing moves	The text did not match a recognised format. Re-check the minus sign on longitude and the separator between the two values.
Aircraft or unit markers stop moving	The live refresh has stopped, usually because the connection dropped. Leave the screen and come back to restart the timers.
Tapping a feature says the reference database is downloading	Wait for the download to finish on a good connection, then tap the feature again.
District Status does nothing when tapped	The district layer is not in the base map style you have selected. Switch to a style that includes it.
