Group Detail
Look inside a group to see its sub groups and contacts, and manage what belongs to it.
The Group Detail screen opens when you tap a group anywhere in the Directory — your own agency, a mutual aid partner, or a group your agency built. It lists what is inside that group in two sections, lets you add or import people, and lets you select contacts to move somewhere else or remove. Sub groups nest as deep as your agency needs, so you can keep opening groups inside groups.

Overview
| Element | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Header | The group's name |
| Sub groups section | Groups nested directly inside this one, sorted alphabetically |
| Contacts section | People who belong directly to this group, sorted alphabetically by display name |
| Empty-state message | Shown in place of the list when the group holds nothing at all |
| Add (+) button | Opens the menu of things you can create here |
| Search bar | Hidden until you ask for it from the Add (+) menu |
| Move and delete controls | Appear along the bottom once you have selected at least one contact |
What each contact row shows
| Element | What it means |
|---|---|
| Initials badge | The contact's initials in their saved color, or red if no color is saved |
| Name | Company name if there is one, otherwise first and last name |
| (My Profile) | Added after your own name |
| Chat button | Shown only for contacts who have their own REDENES sign-in |
| Unread badge | A counter when that contact or sub group has unread chat activity |
| Selection tick | Appears while you are selecting contacts to move or delete |
Opening a group also clears the unread marker for that group, so the badge on the Directory list resets.
Getting Here
- Open Home, then tap Directory.
- Tap a row in Agency, Mutual Aid Agencies or Directory.
- To go deeper, tap a row under Sub groups.
Returning from this screen — with the back control or by swiping right — hands the group's current contents back to the Directory list so it shows your changes right away.
Searching Inside the Group
Search here looks only at this group's own sub groups and contacts, not the whole Directory.
- Tap Add (+) and choose Search. The search bar opens with the keyboard.
- Type a few letters. The Sub groups and Contacts sections narrow as you type.
- Tap the clear control beside the field to reset, or choose Add (+) → Search again to close the bar.
| Search covers | Notes |
|---|---|
| Sub group names | Only the sub groups directly inside this group |
| Contact names | Company, first, middle and last name are all matched together |
To search the entire Directory instead of just this group, go back to the Directory list and search there.
Adding to the Group
- Tap the Add (+) button.
- Choose from the menu:
| Menu item | What it does |
|---|---|
| Add New Group | Opens the popup titled Add New Sub Group so you can create a group nested inside this one. See Add to Directory. |
| Add New Contact | Opens Add a Contact with this group already chosen as the destination |
| Import Contact | Opens your phone's own address book so you can pick someone and bring their details in |
| Search | Shows or hides the search bar |
- Complete the popup or screen that opens and save. The new item appears in the right section, in alphabetical order.

The Add (+) button only appears when two things are true: your role includes permission to add to the Directory, and this particular group is one your agency allows changes to. Mutual aid groups maintained by a partner agency are usually read-only for you.
Importing a Contact From Your Phone
- Tap Add (+) and choose Import Contact.
- Your phone asks for permission to read your contacts the first time. Allow it to continue.
- Pick a person from your phone's address book.
- The Add a Contact screen opens pre-filled with what your phone had — names, numbers, emails, addresses and websites.
- Review and complete anything missing, then save.
Importing is the fastest way to get a long list of station and vendor numbers into a group. Import first, then tidy up the labels so teammates know what each number is for.
Selecting Contacts
Moving and deleting both start the same way, with a press-and-hold.
- Press and hold a contact row. A tick appears on it and the move and delete controls appear.
- Tap more rows to add them to the selection, or tap a selected row again to take it out.
- The controls disappear once nothing is selected.
Selection is only available in groups your agency allows changes to. Inside your own agency's top-level roster the move and delete controls never appear, because that roster is managed by your administrator rather than from the app. Pressing and holding a Sub groups row opens the rename popup instead of starting a selection.
Moving Contacts
- Select one or more contacts.
- Tap the move control. A popup opens headed Move 1 contact(s) — or the number you selected.
- The popup starts at the top level of the Directory and shows Select a destination. Tap a group to open it and see its sub groups; keep tapping to go deeper. A breadcrumb across the top shows the path you have opened, such as
Station 4 > Engine Company. - Use the back control in the popup to step back up a level.
- Tap the move control in the popup to drop the contacts into the group you have opened.
- Cancel closes the popup without moving anything.
| Situation | What you see |
|---|---|
| At the top level | No back control, and no move control — you have to open a group first |
| Inside a group | Both the back and move controls are available |
| A group with nothing inside it | An empty-state message in place of the list |
If the app cannot match the group you chose to the Directory it holds, it reports that it could not find the target group in the Directory structure. Go back to the Directory list so it refreshes, then try the move again.
Deleting Contacts
- Select the contacts you want to remove.
- Tap the delete control. A confirmation appears titled Delete Contacts with the message "Delete 1 selected contact" — or "Delete 3 selected contacts" for a larger selection.
- Confirm with Delete, or back out with Cancel.
- The rows disappear from the list straight away and the removal is sent to the server.
Deleting removes the contact from your agency's Directory for everyone, not just from your device, and it cannot be undone from this screen. If you only want the person somewhere else, move them instead.
Renaming or Deleting a Sub Group
- Press and hold a row under Sub groups.
- The popup opens titled Update sub group, pre-filled with the current name and color.
- Change what you need and save, or use Delete if it is offered.
| Situation | What happens |
|---|---|
| The sub group is editable and you have edit permission | The popup opens |
| It is not editable, or you lack permission | Nothing happens |
| The sub group is empty | A Delete button appears in the popup |
| The sub group still holds anything | No Delete button appears |
Deleting asks "Are you sure you want to delete this group?" — confirm with Delete or back out with Cancel.
How This Connects
- Where the data comes from. The group's contents come from your agency's Directory record on the server, mirrored to your device. Adding, importing, moving, renaming and deleting all write to that record, so a teammate opening the same group sees your change once their app refreshes. Going back from this screen updates the Directory list you came from immediately.
- Chat. Chat buttons on contact rows start the same conversations you would find on Messages, and the unread badges on these rows count the same unread activity.
- Phone. Contacts you add here become callable from Contact Detail through either the app's calling service or your phone's dialer.
- Calendar. People in your agency group and in mutual aid groups are exactly the people offered in the Invited Users picker when you build an event.
- Your phone's address book. Import Contact reads from it; Export Contact on Contact Detail writes back to it. The two stay separate afterwards.
- Offline and reconnect. Browsing, searching and opening contacts work offline. Contacts and sub groups you create offline are saved on the device and pushed when the connection returns. Moves and deletions are queued the same way.
Troubleshooting
| If this happens | What to do |
|---|---|
| The group looks empty but you expected people in it | Check the Sub groups section — the contacts may sit one level deeper. |
| There is no Add (+) button | Either your role does not include add permission, or this group is read-only for your agency. |
| Press-and-hold does not start a selection | You are in a group where moving and deleting are not allowed, such as your agency's top-level roster. |
| A move reports that the target group could not be found | Go back to the Directory list so it refreshes, then repeat the move. |
| Import Contact does nothing | Your phone's contacts permission was declined. Turn it on for the app in your phone's settings. |
| The move popup shows no groups to pick | Your agency has no other groups yet. Create one from the Directory list first. |
| A deleted contact is still visible on another device | That device has not refreshed yet. It will drop off the next time the Directory loads there. |
| A sub group has no Delete button | It still holds sub groups or contacts. Empty it first. |
